Privacy policy
Earth and Moon is a globe app that shows what is happening on Earth right now, at the real speed. The app does not ask you to create an account, does not collect anything that identifies you, and shows no ads. The App Store version contains no analytics. The browser version and these web pages use Vercel Web Analytics to count visits. It uses no cookies and does not identify individuals (it keeps no identifier that could link a device or a person across visits).
Location
Your location is used only to:
- mark where you are on the globe, and show the direction of the Sun and Moon from there
- show rain around you, and the weather where you are
Location is handled on your device only and is never sent to us — we do not run any servers. To fetch rain, weather and place names, the app sends a latitude and longitude to the outside services listed below. When your own location is sent, it is rounded to two decimal places (roughly a 1 km square). A point you tap on the map is sent with four decimal places to look up its name; that is not your location. The location marker on screen is not rounded, because it never leaves your device. You can withdraw location permission at any time in your device settings; everything except the location features keeps working.
Device orientation
The compass may use your device’s heading sensor. It is read only when you allow it, and never leaves your device.
Outside services
The app receives map, weather and astronomy data from the services below. Each receives the request needed to return that data (the table shows which ones include location). Each service handles requests under its own terms.
| Service | Used for | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Japan Meteorological Agency (www.jma.go.jp) | Rain radar, forecasts, observations, typhoons, weather charts | By forecast area (about the size of a prefecture) |
| GSI Japan (cyberjapandata.gsi.go.jp / mreversegeocoder.gsi.go.jp) | Base map under the rain radar; place names in Japan | Map tiles for the area in view. Place names: latitude and longitude (two decimal places for your own location) |
| NASA GIBS (gibs.earthdata.nasa.gov) | Land, night lights, global rainfall | Map tiles for the area in view |
| EOX (tiles.maps.eox.at) | Close-up land imagery (Sentinel-2) | Map tiles for the area in view |
| Open-Meteo (api.open-meteo.com) | Weather outside Japan | Latitude and longitude (two decimal places for your own location) |
| BigDataCloud (api.bigdatacloud.net) | Place names outside Japan | Latitude and longitude (two decimal places for your own location) |
| CelesTrak (celestrak.org) | ISS orbital elements | None |
| adsb.lol / adsb.fi | Aircraft positions (only when that layer is on) | Centre of the area in view |
| Vercel (vercel.com) | Visit counts for the browser version and these web pages. Not used in the App Store version | None (no cookies either) |
What stays on your device
The app may keep temporary copies of data it has fetched, such as map tiles, so that it loads faster. They are removed when you delete the app. Nothing is recorded to identify you.
Children
The app is suitable for all ages. Because it collects no personal information, nothing is handled differently by age.
Changes
If this policy changes, this page will be updated and the date at the top revised.
